Government releases Coastal Planning Guideline

The Minister for Planning recently released the NSW Coastal Planning Guideline – Adapting to Sea Level Rise which covers the State's 1,500 kilometre coastline.
HIA's response to the Guideline includes:
The HIA is cautious of these Guidelines which allows Councils to implement a wide range of precautionary measures adding to the uncertainty for homeowners and the development industry.
The NSW sea level rise benchmarks will eliminate the current ad hoc approaches of individual Councils however a national sea level rise benchmark would provide a more consistent approach across the country.
It is critical that Councils do not use this guideline as a way to unnecessarily stall or prohibit development.
HIA believes the Federal Government should undertake further monitoring and data collection and a national sea level rise benchmark be established.
