MEMBERS ATTEND HIA HOME SHOW FREE
HIA Members will be given free entry to the Home Show on presentation of their membership card. The Home Show will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 28 and 10am to 4pm on Sunday 29 August featuring over 60 exhibitors showcasing a range of new products and services. There will be exclusive specials being offered by exhibitors, a relocatable home and a shipping container converted into a home. A giant jumping castle will be there for the children to enjoy and there will also be live auctions on the hour providing an opportunity to pick up a bargain. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. We hope to see you there.
PLANNING DIRECTIVE FOR THE RESCODE
HIA has been advised that the Minister for Planning, Bryan Green, has issued instructions to his department to start preparing the Ministerial Directive for the ResCode. This is a significant step forward in the long standing battle for Planning Reform in this state. HIA has welcomed this milestone and is now in the process of preparing a submission for the TPC to support the implementation of the Rescode. HIA has invited the Minister to speak at out next Economic Outlook forum.
HIA AND COMMONWEALTH BANK INDUSTRY OUTLOOK EVENTS
Industry Outlook events are marked in the diaries of the building industry leaders and attracts the attention of the media. These events have been very successful amongst HIA's membership body. HIA's Economist Matthew King will be presenting the latest trends and developments in the Tasmanian residential building market and HIA would like to welcome guest speaker, the Hon Bryan Green MP, to the Hobart Breakfast to discuss Planning Reforms and the Residential code. The Industry Outlook Evening in the North West will also welcome Greg Alomes from the Planning Commission to present on Planning Reforms and Kerry Shepherd from Workplace Standards to discuss Security of Payments. This forum ensures attendees stay informed of special industry developments and are provided with timely, personal economic forecasts. SEMINAR ON NEW DISABILITY ACCESS STANDARDS FOR BUILDINGS
A half-day seminar will be held in Hobart in September 2010 to provide building surveyors, building designers, architects, builders, building owners or managers, access consultants and other interested stakeholders with an overview of the new Commonwealth Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards (Premises
Standards) and their effect. The seminar will also provide an opportunity for participants to discuss questions of interpretation. The Premises Standards are expected to deliver significant improvements in the level of access for new buildings and existing buildings undergoing renovation. Corresponding changes are proposed to the Building Code of Australia to commence at the same time. More
IXL PACIFIC PANEL HEATERS (MODEL NOS: 72625, 72645, 72646) RECALL
Sampford IXL has undertaken a voluntary recall of IXL Pacific Panel Heaters after a number of incidents involving these heaters. Over 2,700 IXL 'Pacific' model panel heaters have been sold in Tasmania since 2005 but only a minority of customers have notified Sampford IXL to arrange removal and refund.
Due to the poor response to the recall notice, Workplace Standards Tasmania is requesting all electrical contractors to check their records for the installation of IXL Pacific heaters and advise their customers of the published recall notice.
Defect Details and Potential Hazard Sampford IXL has received reports of internal failures which may lead to overheating resulting in potential fire or hazardous melting of internal product components. Consumer Action Customers must immediately stop using the heater and contact Sampford IXL for a refund and to make arrangements for collection by Sampford IXL. If you are unsure of your heater's model number, please call for assistance. Please do not attempt to remove and disconnect permanently wired heaters. BEWARE OF CALLERS OFFERING FREE ELECTRICAL SAFETY CHECKS
Householders are being alerted to the potential threat of bogus operators offering free electrical checks of wiring in homes. Any calls from a person offering this free service should be dealt with caution. While the caller may be genuine, there is the potential for it to be a bogus offer. Under no circumstances should anyone other than a licensed electrician be doing electrical checks. Householders should also be cautious about inviting anyone into their homes, unless they are satisfied that they are genuine.
