New Workplace and Safety Laws
The new national Workplace, Health and Safety (WHS) Laws are set to be introduced on 1st January 2012. HIA has lobbied both the NSW and ACT Governments to put in place a 12 month moratorium on the introduction of the WHS laws, without success to date.

The regulations have not yet been presented to industry nor have the final codes of practice. HIA believes it is ridiculous to introduce new laws on a prescribed date without enough time for industry to train its members in the new responsibilities when working on a domestic construction site.

HIA has been working closely with NSW WorkCover and the ACT WorkSafe in preparing for the new rules applying on 1st  January. We have been running workshops advising members of some of the likely changes in the WHS ACT that has been passed in the relevant parliamentary jurisdictions. HIA will continue to roll out information sessions and workshops informing industry of their responsibilities in the New Year, please keep your eyes peeled for these events.
