New NSW Work Health and Safety Laws

Happy New Year and welcome back!
It wouldn't be the start of the New Year without some form of change in the industry. This year, one of the most significant changes facing the industry is the implementation of the NSW Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws. These laws replace what were previously called the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) laws, and came into force on 1st January 2012.
For many decades the letters OH&S have been used to represent Occupational Health and Safety. Now everyone will have to become familiar with the letters WHS, which stands for Workplace Health and Safety.
While many of the requirements are unchanged, there are some new requirements and changes in terminology, so it is essential that all members review their current processes to ensure they comply. Click here for more information.

This allows the continued use of either a council complying development controls or the existing state-wide codes for the same development types until a council has implemented the new standard instrument local environmental plan. This amendment addressed the recent expiration of transitional arrangements in September 2011. Click here for more information.
