HIA Lobbying Update
HIA has kicked off its lobbying efforts for 2012. Achieving the best outcomes for our members and ensuring the delivery of positive policy outcomes for the residential building industry in the NSW region remains our priority throughout the coming year.

Ministerial Meetings
HIA recently met with Brad Hazzard, Minister for Planning and Infrastructure. The Issues Paper of the NSW Planning System review was high on the agenda and the Minister acknowledged HIA’s leading role as a key stakeholder. Discussions around improving housing supply, both initiatives and targets to meet the real underlying demand in NSW, was also front and centre.
Last week HIA NSW hosted a successful “learning” visit for the Fair Trading Minister’s senior staff. Highly valuing the relationship that has developed with HIA as a key stakeholder in the home building industry, Minister Roberts initiated the meeting. HIA was asked to allow his staff to visit us so that they could get to know our organisation better. During discussions HIA was informed that the review of the Home Building Act will be a top priority for the Minister. Looks like we will have a busy year ahead.

New Committee To Encourage Housing Supply In Greenfield Areas
HIA welcomes Minister Hazzard’s announcement that a special Committee run by the Premier’s Department has been set up to encourage development in greenfield areas. In a bid to address the chronic housing shortage in NSW and speed up housing delivery, the Government has invited land owners to nominate land suitable for housing. As a result, 43 greenfield sites for new housing projects proposed by developers will be considered by the new Committee of government bureaucrats before going to Cabinet for approval. Schedule of ‘land owner nominated sites’.

HIA is pleased the Government is listening to our industry. We support any measure which will boost the number of houses built and in turn bring down the cost of housing.
