ABS Statistics for New Homes in the NT Going the Wrong Way
There is certainly plenty of positives occurring in regard to the NT economy. The announcement of the next stage of the INPEX Project along with the healthy employment figures are all positives. Unfortunately, the news for potential home owners and renters is far less comforting.

The latests ABS figures on approvals and home finance show that the provision of affordable housing in the Territory is going backwards. This is at a time when there should be an upswing in numbers and sentiment due to the expected influx of new workers in both the mining and associated light manufacturing industries.

The actual time-lag between the Government releasing land and the land being brought to market is far too long. In many cases between 8 and 12 years.

It is now encumbant upon the Government to make the planning system far more responsive to quick release and to put in place provisions for the rapid approval and development of infrastructure of earmarked land divisions. For more information Click on the 2 Media Releases below.

Carbon Tax and Contract Pricing
A question that has been put on many occasions goes to how builders can factor in the price of the carbon tax for contracts that span the implementation date of 1 July 2012. This is not as straightforward as the GST was, for example, as neither the quantum or timing of price rises will be known.

An HIA Information Sheet has been provided that looks at the options to pass on carbon tax rises in contracts - that are unquantified at signing. It must be stressed that these are simply possible options and should be used only after discussion with the HIA Workplace Advisers. A further word of caution relates to the ACCC, which has released guidelines for carbon tax related pricing communications, which are also covered. If Members enter into communications concerning the relationship of a price increase to the tax, they need to be confident that they can verify the basis for their claims if required.
