HAVE YOU DONE ANY GREAT WORK IN THE LAST 2 YEARS?

I want to encourage all our members to seriously consider entering the 2012 HIA-CSR Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards this year.
We are heading into a difficult year and members should not underestimate the value of being a finalist or winner of a Housing Award Category. It is a powerful marketing tool that gives you and your business a competitive edge with clients and tenders.
So if have done any work that you are particularly proud of that shows what you and your team are capable of doing then you should enter it into the Housing Awards.
There are lots of different categories to enter from affordable custom built homes to renovations, kitchens and bathrooms.
The good thing is, the work can be anything you have done over the past 2 years and not just your most recent projects.
Entries close in April and if you are interested in participating in the 2012 Awards Program please click here for more information or contact Keira Carne on 03 6230 4600. We will be happy to guide you through the process and help you put your entry in, it is quite simple, it is not time consuming and the rewards are huge.
We look forward to seeing your entry.

PROPOSED NEW BUILDING DISPUTE AND CONTRACT LAWS FOR TASMANIA
The government is proposing to introduce new laws under the Residential Building Work Quality (Warranties and Disputes) Bill 2012.
The proposed regulations will:
* Establish a dispute resolution process for building disputes
* Create an ability for WST to issue rectification orders for defective building work
* Restrict the use of Cost Plus Contracts and Provisional and Sums.
HIA is supportive of a fast, efficient and low cost mechanism for resolving disputes but we need to ensure it is fair to both parties and not a builder bashing forum.
We will also resist any attempts to remove Cost Plus Contracts or Provisional Sums as these contracts are widely used in renovation work that is difficult to quantify.
Our legal team is reviewing the Bill and our IR/Legal Committee will be providing member input into HIA's response to WST.
A copy of the proposed laws can be found on www.wst.tas.gov.au

DOES YOUR BUSINESS NEED A CFO?
Put it another way, can you afford not to have a CFO? With the advent of cloud technology, including online accounting software, it is now more feasible for your business to have an online (or external) CFO to help manage your financial information. Your accountant or business advisor can be the ideal person for this role.
Your CFO lives in the cloud, accessing your financial information remotely meaning lower costs and more proactive advice - whether it be reviewing results, preparing KPI or other financial/performance reports, tax planning, preparing budgets etc. The external "online" CFO can be part of the driving forces behind future business success, and let's face it, we're all in business to make money.
Why not combine the work your bookkeeper does with your accountant/CFO more often, to make a more streamlined and cost effective process, with more accuracy, timeliness and better financial reports to make decisions from?
KPMG have contract bookkeepers available, supported by qualified accountants that can work with your business. For more information on how to streamline your accounting software and back office processes, please contact Brett McDermott at KPMG on 03 6337 3737 or bmcdermott@kpmg.com.au.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN TIMBER (Processing and Building)
Online education and training can change the game for wood products industry. Associate Professor Greg Nolan, Director of the University of Tasmania's Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood (CSAW), predicts that online education and training can change the game for the Australian and New Zealand timber and wood products industry. Professor Nolan said 'the wood products industry has always faced natural disadvantages in education and training. It is a regional industry, so it's generally a long way from major educational institutions. Then, it is a dispersed industry, scattered around the country. This makes bringing a viable group of students together for traditional educational and training courses very difficult.' Click here for a more and here for course information.
